Who is a Good Candidate for Dentures?

Those who are missing some or all of their teeth are typically eligible to receive custom dentures to rebuild their smiles. Our team will develop unique prosthetics that will be designed based on the number of teeth that you lost and their locations in your mouth. Before then, we’ll also need to ensure your mouth is completely healthy and free of any underlying problems like decay or gum disease, which can cause complications if not treated early on. Once you’re back to oral health, we can move forward with the treatment.

Types of Dentures

Dentures can come in several ways depending on your level of tooth loss. Here are some of the options our team provides to help patients renew their bites:

Partial Dentures

Similar to regular dentures, these prosthetics are made to replace missing teeth in different areas of the mouth. To remain on the gum line, they will typically be constructed with metal brackets that can clasp to nearby healthy teeth for support.

Full Dentures

Traditional dentures are designed to be placed atop an entire arch to restore your full bite. This option doesn’t require adjacent teeth for support but can instead stay in place via natural suction to the gum line.

Implant Dentures

Instead of using healthy teeth or your gums for support, implant dentures will be fitted atop titanium posts that will have been embedded in the jawbone beforehand. Due to being anchored directly to your facial structure, this option comes with exceptional stability, can last decades to a lifetime, and can even prevent jawbone deterioration that typically occurs from tooth loss.

The Benefits of Dentures

  • Boosts your confidence and self-esteem
  • Simplified maintenance
  • Serves as a placeholder for other natural teeth
  • Lifelike appearance
  • Cost-effective method
  • Can last 10+ years with proper care (30+ years for implant dentures)

Denture FAQs

Why Do My Dentures Smell?

If you’ve begun to notice a foul odor on your dentures, then it’s time to take a look at your diet and oral hygiene regimen. In addition to cutting back on garlic, onions, pickles, and other pungent foods, make sure that you’re committing to good habits, like brushing your teeth and dentures at least twice a day. If nothing seems to be working, then you should schedule an appointment with our Chardon dental team. That way, we can conduct an oral exam to ensure that an untreated oral health problem, like periodontal disease, isn’t to blame.

What Should You Do if Your Dentures Break?

Let’s start with what you shouldn’t do. Do not use an at-home denture repair kit, superglue, or any other household adhesives. It’s also important that you don’t wear your broken restoration. Instead, give us a call, put your denture in its storage case for safekeeping, and get to our office as soon as you can so we can begin the process of repairing or replacing it.

Can Dentures Become Ill-Fitting?

Yes. In fact, since they don’t prevent your jawbone from eroding, it’s completely normal for them to become ill-fitting overtime. Since this can lead to several issues – from swollen gums to bad breath and trouble enunciating clearly – we strongly recommend coming to our office every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning. In addition to conducting an oral cancer screening and removing harmful substances, like plaque, we can have your dentures relined or, after several years, provide you with new dentures that better suit you.

Can I Sleep with My Dentures?

We usually recommend keeping your dentures in for the first 24 hours. After that, you should take them out every night when you go to bed. This is a small habit that goes a long way when it comes to preventing soft tissue irritation, reducing your risk of pneumonia, and keeping your restoration clean.

Is It Hard to Talk with Dentures?

Whether you have a partial, full, or implant denture, it’s completely normal to experience a learning curve. The best thing to do is practice, practice, practice. This will give your tongue time to adjust to the restoration, shortening the adjustment period.

Tip: Before you talk, swallow to get rid of excess saliva that could muddle your speech. It’s also helpful to bite down first to ensure your dentures are in the correct position.

Can I Use Regular Toothpaste to Clean My Dentures?

You may be surprised to hear that you should use a special toothpaste for your dentures. That’s because regular toothpaste can leave behind microscopic scratches that dull the appearance overtime. So, use one that’s made specifically for dentures, and opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush instead of a hard-bristled one as well.
